So we're sponsoring a rally stage…Yes, really!

Watch companies sponsor things. Usually a regatta, a golf tournament, or a motor race with a great deal of money swirling around in it. We're sponsoring the rally stage at Mathewsons Live, at the Great Yorkshire Showground on 22 and 23 August. So a classic car festival in Harrogate takes a bit of explaining.

Mathewsons are a family-run car auction house in Thornton-le-Dale, a charming village in North Yorkshire. Since 2019 they have also been the subject of Bangers & Cash, a television programme with a very large following in the UK and, we're told, a fair few viewers well beyond it.

The appeal to us is that it follows each car the whole way through. Dragged out of a barn or collected off somebody's driveway, catalogued and researched, sold under the hammer, then handed over to whoever bought it, often to be restored. Classics mostly, though plenty of modern cars go through as well.

This August is their first festival of their own. More than 500 vehicles, live rally demonstrations, an auction, and three generations of the same family somewhere in the middle of it all.

We don't advertise much. When we do put our name to something, it tends to be because we already liked it. David has watched the programme for years. Simon races, and the Mathewsons race too, which is how we ended up on the rally stage rather than anywhere else on the showground.

There's more common ground than the cars, though. Mathewsons is a family business in a small village that has become known a long way beyond it. The people who follow them are proper collectors: the sort who want to know who made a thing, where, and whether a pair of hands was involved at any point. A good many of them have a soft spot for what can come out of a workshop. We know the feeling.
